Confessions of a Facebook addict: Part 2

5 discoveries I made about happiness in Spacebook

Remember those nauseating Magic Eye 3D wall posters so trendy in the 90s that made you go cross-eyed as you stared at them waiting for the hidden image to pop out?

And once you finally SEE the hidden surprise, you just can’t bloodey unsee it?

Their creation was based on research into depth perception by a visual neuroscientist called Dr. Bela Julesz. His discoveries later influenced 70s artwork of wildly eccentric surrealist Salvador Dali – famous for his melting clocks, curled moustache and designing the Chupa Chups logo.

And you thought this was a blog about Taekwondo? Ha! Continue Reading »

Confessions of a Facebook addict: Part 1

My name is Kristy and I am a Facebook-o-holic. *gulp

At the time of writing, I am 20 days Facey (or Fancy!) free.

Maybe you’ve noticed (or not!), over the past year I have committed a significant chunk of my spare time to Taekwondo blogging and building a buzzing community around that blog.

The miracle of social media, or my particular brand of poison – Facebook – has been a massively valuable tool in finding the right audience. People just like you to connect with, bounce off and share my later-in-life journey into the martial arts with.

It’s been exhilarating.

But it’s also been exhausting. Continue Reading »

Gold for everyone in story of Olympic Taekwondo victory

“I wasn’t born a gold medallist. I was just a girl who loved taekwondo, the challenges it brought and the satisfaction of improving and winning” – Olympic Gold Medallist for Australia in Taekwondo, Lauren Burns

I don’t fantasize much about holidaying at an exclusive tropical resort or owning a mansion. I dream about time on the couch.

Right now you’re thinking: “Here’s a person who knows how to have a good time!”.

I know, my life is a dazzling ball of fire! Lol.

In my defence, juggling family, work, domestic mess (I mean bliss!) while trying to keep fit and healthy is hectic.

So the thought of time on the couch, by myself and in charge of the remote really does make me a little starry eyed.

Except, that is, when it happens.

Empower women with a Pink Belt Scholarship

The Mortal Mouse & Australian Taekwondo have joined forces in the hope of helping at least one Australian woman to realise the incredible life benefits of Taekwondo training with a one year Pink Belt Scholarship.

You can be a personal contributor or Business Sponsor by donating here: https://chuffed.org/project/pinkbelt

A little bit of context

Our world needs more women doing Taekwondo.

Why? Because in 2018 domestic violence, abuse, eating disorders and workplace inequality STILL cause immense suffering.

These are complex issues and learning Taekwondo is no miracle cure. But it CAN help. Continue Reading »

Contribute to research on the benefits of martial arts!

Martial Artists! Contribute your experiences to an international research project investigating links between martial arts training and development of communication and leadership skills.

There is so much anecdotal evidence around about the benefits of our training but here is a way we can all help develop more hard science on it.

Mortal Mouse follower Sonja H. Bickford (DBA, MBA) is a Taekwondo mum who, like so many probably reading this, discovered a love of martial arts later in life.

But here’s the kicker! (See what I did there? Haha!)

She’s also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska Kearney, USA!

And now she’s combining her talents and passions in an exciting research project. Continue Reading »

This is a Taekwondo Blog!

Still in the right place? Keen to read about Taekwondo topics and martial arts generally? Maybe you even started training later in life like me? Ok. Excellent!

Thank you for stopping by! This is the place to say G’day! Drop me a comment below, tell me about yourself and your interest in Taekwondo.

Taekwondo blogger Kristy Hitchens aka The Mortal Mouse

Heads up though! This is NOT your traditional Taekwondo Blog. I’m not an instructor so a lot of what you will see here is less about technique and tradition and MORE about encouragement, inspiration and well…fun!

I started Taekwondo after watching my son train for 5 years and just after I turned the big 4-Ohhhhhh. It’s been an utter game-changer for me.

I decided to start a Taekwondo blog because I have made some wonderful connections all over the world with others who love all kinds of martial arts for fun and fitness. I’ve also found many experience the same ‘game-changing’ effect as me.

The story I wrote hoping to inspire others to just HAVE A GO at something new was published on the website of Women’s Health magazine Australia and was shared on Facebook almost 7000 times. It was my first article about Taekwondo so I decided to keep writing and The Mortal Mouse was born.

I hope you will drop by regularly so we can keep in touch or shoot me an email and I’ll add you to my mailing list.
