Warrior breathing techniques to fire up your Taekwondo endurance and recovery

Our breathing underpins everything we do AND according to “The Warrior Coach” is the key to unlocking abundant energy, perfect health and optimal performance. I’d like to be less puffed out at Taekwondo training so I can work harder. I asked for some tips and here is what I discovered…

Some people love running with friends. Not me.

I prefer to run on my own.

Mostly because I’m about as slow as a turtle swimming through peanut butter. Still lapping everyone on the couch though! Haha.

I have mild asthma. When I can’t get control of my breathing and start seeing stars, panic sets in which of course just makes the whole thing worse.

So the hardest part of running for me is concentrating on keeping my breathing steady. It actually works really well as an active meditation because it takes up all of my focus.

So talking of breathing, you might recall my previous article containing 6 Taekwondo tips from Australia’s most qualified female instructor Carmella Hartnett.

Fight for Change and the mystery of martial arts!

Many people who have taken up a form of martial arts like Taekwondo will tell you they experienced a somewhat magical transition where the practice became not so much a part of their life, but a way of life.

And through this process, their club becomes not a place where they turn up once or twice a week to train, but something inside of them.

This was how it felt when Taekwondo Central and its members gathered behind me in support of Saturday’s Fight for Change event, hosted by Hitfm breakfast radio presenters Jesse and Juelz.

More energy for Taekwondo with 6 quick food tips from a dietitian to the elites

Do you wish you had more energy? Balancing family and work while trying to eat healthy, smash out your Taekwondo goals and not lose the plot completely is hard. So I’ve sought the advice of qualified sports dietitian Erica Stephens for some quick and easy hints that will not only improve your overall health, but somewhat magically deliver your body with more energy so everything just seems a little bit easier…

Last week I travelled with my husband for two hours to arrive at the gates of a concert I had been hanging out to see for months only to have the gate attendant point out that our tickets were for the next night.

See! Says so RIGHT THERE on the TICKETS! *cue teeny emotional meltdown

Life is busy am I right? Things had been so hectic in my house the previous few weeks with preparing my son for his Black Belt grading plus working behind the scenes on my Pink Belt Scholarship project on top of all the usual guff.

Product Review: Elite Sports boxing gloves

I do so love to punch and kick things for fun but I have never really thought of myself as particularly sporty, athletic or fit.

For this reason I was a tiny bit gob-smacked when sports clothing and equipment company Elite Sports asked me to review some of their gear.

Am I even qualified for that?

After giving this some careful thought, I figured (rather than targeting ELITE Athletes) Elite Sports must be interested in making the average, everyday punter like me FEEL like an Elite athlete by providing them with quality gear at an affordable price.

So if that’s their game plan, Elite Sports, I’m your lady! Read more to claim a discount on purchase…

Gold for everyone in story of Olympic Taekwondo victory

“I wasn’t born a gold medallist. I was just a girl who loved taekwondo, the challenges it brought and the satisfaction of improving and winning” – Olympic Gold Medallist for Australia in Taekwondo, Lauren Burns

I don’t fantasize much about holidaying at an exclusive tropical resort or owning a mansion. I dream about time on the couch.

Right now you’re thinking: “Here’s a person who knows how to have a good time!”.

I know, my life is a dazzling ball of fire! Lol.

In my defence, juggling family, work, domestic mess (I mean bliss!) while trying to keep fit and healthy is hectic.

So the thought of time on the couch, by myself and in charge of the remote really does make me a little starry eyed.

Except, that is, when it happens.

Your blog inspired my son to start Taekwondo!

As I’m sure you’re aware by now, I write for a mostly (eh-hem) middle-aged audience. Therefore I was filled up with goodness by the below message I received from Norwegian Dad Tor about the little sparks my article created for his 11-year-old son…

I recently started TKD at 40, inspired by my daughter of 8 who came home from each practice with a huge grinning smile on her face chock full of enthusiasm over what she’d learnt.

Aching joints and wheezing breath aside, I’m having a great time! My son of 11 recently expressed a cautious interest to join, but was reluctant at the same time. He’s quite cerebral and a little anxious about new stuff.

Empower women with a Pink Belt Scholarship

The Mortal Mouse & Australian Taekwondo have joined forces in the hope of helping at least one Australian woman to realise the incredible life benefits of Taekwondo training with a one year Pink Belt Scholarship.

You can be a personal contributor or Business Sponsor by donating here: https://chuffed.org/project/pinkbelt

A little bit of context

Our world needs more women doing Taekwondo.

Why? Because in 2018 domestic violence, abuse, eating disorders and workplace inequality STILL cause immense suffering.

These are complex issues and learning Taekwondo is no miracle cure. But it CAN help. Continue Reading »

Secrets of success from a Taekwondo World Champion, personal trainer mum

Whether you see your future self on a podium or just in a better place than you are now, new Taekwondo World Champion Joanne Licastro’s story of transformation and triumph provides an inspiring mandate for achieving goals, not just in martial arts, but in life. And central to her success, she believes, was one key ingredient…

As a 28-year-old, West Australian mum of two, Joanne Licastro walked into her first Taekwondo training session feeling nervous and with the simple aim of “not dying”.

Fast forward 15 years to now, and Jo is standing on a podium in an Eastern European country with Gold around her neck having been named a World Champion and the Australian National Anthem playing in her honour.

How does that happen? Continue Reading »

Contribute to research on the benefits of martial arts!

Martial Artists! Contribute your experiences to an international research project investigating links between martial arts training and development of communication and leadership skills.

There is so much anecdotal evidence around about the benefits of our training but here is a way we can all help develop more hard science on it.

Mortal Mouse follower Sonja H. Bickford (DBA, MBA) is a Taekwondo mum who, like so many probably reading this, discovered a love of martial arts later in life.

But here’s the kicker! (See what I did there? Haha!)

She’s also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska Kearney, USA!

And now she’s combining her talents and passions in an exciting research project. Continue Reading »
