Scholarships deliver empowered new lives across Australia

In its second year, Pink Belt Project has tripled the number of women in need who will benefit from 12 months of free Taekwondo at their nearest club.

So far, a total of 20 women across Australia – all healing from the trauma of domestic abuse or sexual assault – have been awarded a 2020 Pink Belt Scholarship and will be on the road to an empowered new life.

Recipients are located in Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT.

Five women completed 12-month scholarships in 2019.

Pink Belt Scholarships are funded via a combination of a crowdfunding campaign and taekwondo instructors who agree to offer a club-sponsored scholarship at their school.

Each scholarship is valued at $2,000, therefore equating to $30,000 in funds raised for the project so far.

Some Taekwondo clubs offering scholarships are yet to find a suitable applicant so if you are interested in applying for a Pink Belt Scholarship, please email kristy@pinkbelt.com.au

From our 2019 scholarship recipients:

Pink belt project is… A wonderful initiative giving women an opportunity to have confidence in themselves by learning skills to protect themselves through a fully paid scholarship when they could not normally afford.

For me Taekwondo has… Given me the confidence in myself. I have always lacked motivation and I now have a passion to fight through and learn new skills. The best part is the support and encouragement by the whole Taekwondo family.

Pink Belt Project IS… The gift that keeps on giving. My scholarship may be coming to an end, but what it has allowed me to experience will live on. I found strength, humility, and commitment. Something to focus on in a time of uncertainty and upheaval. But mostly, I found a community of empowered people, empowering others.

For me, Taekwondo has…  Allowed me to find a piece of myself. 2019 was one of the worst years I’ve experienced, and In the process I lost every part of ME. Someone asked me what I do for fun, for “joy” and I couldn’t answer. I had forgotten who I was. Finding those parts of me again has been a slow process, but for one hour, twice a week, I get to feel like the person I used to be.

Pink Belt Project Is… A chance to believe women are capable of doing anything they put their mind to.

For me, Taekwondo has…  Helped me find myself and take back my dignity. It has given me confidence and strength and the focus that I needed to deal with the worst situation.

Pink Belt Project IS… Amazing! Being supported in this way for the last 12 months really means a lot. It’s been a really tough year and this was one of the first good things that happened. It was one of the first things I didn’t have to worry about, it was a relief.

For me, Taekwondo has…  Given me the confidence to back myself. I’ve always felt mentally strong, and have been relatively fit but TKD has shown me that I can protect myself. It’s kept me safe and this year has hopefully shown my kids that anything is possible!
